 This ten-week course will give a historical and political context to the work of a range of composers and songwriters – some of them acknowledged masters, others obscure but important. It will explore how they reacted to, and interpreted, the world around them and draw from a wide variety of music, illustrated by video clips.

Nov 14     My Town:   Composers and comment on their immediate environment
Nov 21     Protest Music: 100 years of campaigning in the USA
Nov 28    The Swinging Sixties: Changing times impact on the musical spectrum
Dec   5      Contemporary Concerns: Today’s composers have their say
