LAMB GUILD UPDATE – March 2017

LAMB GUILD AGM, REUNION LUNCH, and LECTURE 2017,

The next Annual General Meeting of the Lamb Guild will be held at

11:00 AM on Sunday 14th May 2017 at

Chancellors Hotel and Conference Centre

Chancellors Way, Fallowfield, MANCHESTER, M14 6NN

Morning coffee will be served in the Conservatory lounge from 10:30 AM.

The AGM will be followed by a Carvery / Hot Buffet Lunch in the Carriage Restaurant which will be free of charge to those attending the AGM.

After lunch Dr Birgitta Hoffmann will be giving a Lecture on

“THE MERCHANT ADVENTURERS”

Long before the East India Company was bringing the wealth of India and Asia to Britain, British Merchants were trading beyond British shores selling English and Welsh wool, tin, and copper, and importing French and Spanish wine, cloth, spices and luxury goods. To differentiate them from the traders who operated within the British Isles, they acquired the name “Merchant Adventurers” and organised themselves with sumptuous Guild Halls and social structures. This lecture will look at the history and archaeological and architectural evidence the Merchant Adventurers have left behind.

The event should finish about 3:00 PM.

This invitation applies to both “historic” members of the Lamb Guild and those who have attended two or more Weekends organised jointly with MANCENT.

To register for lunch contact David Thorpe by phone (01782 511796) or E-mail (dthorpe954@aol.com) or by writing to him at

7 Severn Close, Biddulph, STOKE-ON-TRENT ST8 7PG

The AGM will address future use or disposal of all Lamb Guild funds now that all the accounts held directly by the Guild are effectively “unlocked” and, potentially, winding-up of the Lamb Guild.

Chancellors re-opened to schedule on March 8th following their £4 million refurbishment. It will be interesting to see the results!

One week later Alston Hall, which was undergoing restoration following closure as a Residential College, was badly damaged by fire!
