Thanks to the letters between Marcus Aurelius and Fronto, we have long since seen Antoninus Pius as the ‘frugal emperor’ who enjoyed nothing more than spend time on his farms and help with the harvest.
\nThe excavations at Villa Magna near Anagni have now helped to put this image of the rural emperor in perspective, by revealing some of the features of this ‘rural palace’ and its luxurious fittings, which makes it more akin to Trianon, than a ‘normal’ Roman villa.<\/p>\n
