As a composer, Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) has long suffered from being too readily linked with Debussy; it is all too easy to see him merely as \u2018the other Impressionist\u2019, even though he, like his older contemporary, firmly rejected the label. Neither has it helped his cause that Stravinsky once described him as \u2018the most perfect of Swiss watchmakers\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of this course is to establish the distinctive nature of his musical style and his views about what music should be like. We shall also explore the sheer variety of his output, which ranges from songs and small-scale piano music to larger works like the chamber music, concertos and his symphonic ballet Daphnis and Chloe<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n
