By the time the Vikings came, they had developed an urban culture, often focused around Christian churches. This urban tradition was often built on Roman precedents, but there are other sites that were new developments and whose life and the services they offered were so central to life in Britain that it even survived and continued to prosper under the ensuing Viking period.
