The Roman amphitheatre was one of defining monuments of Rome in the minds of later scholars. A place of entertainment and of public justice, it was hugely expensive, required a large supporting infrastructure and became a symbol of civic pride. But it also was of importance to the military, and later on to the early Christian churches.
Starting with the recently published results from the excavations at the amphitheatre at Chester, we will be looking at the amphitheatres in Britain and in Gaul and how the various locations managed to adapt to local circumstances to allow the running of their own shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
