Some images are so powerful they have become indelibly associated with the event depicted. They may be catalysts for artistic creation (including propaganda) and criticism as well as subjects of historical research. But as with all primary source material, the evidence does not \u2018speak for itself\u2019; it requires contextualisation and interpretation to uncover meaning and significance.
