We often say that we need to sympathise with a novel\u2019s central character. But if this is true, why do novelists ever write about awkward, irritating or nasty people?<\/p>\n

We shall discuss this issue as we study:

\nA Confederacy of Dunces<\/em><\/a> (1980) by John Kennedy Toole
\nHomer and Langley<\/em><\/a> (2009) by E.L. Doctorow<\/p>\n
