Next, the East India Company from its early trading role in the 17th century, through the occupation of large parts of India and ending with the 1857 Rebellion\/Mutiny.\u00a0 We then consider the British Raj from 1858 through to independence in 1947.\u00a0 British rule over a vast population and territory will be analysed, together with discussion of European women\u2019s experiences. The key literary products of British imperialism will be examined.
