{"id":3494,"date":"2020-08-12T17:08:56","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T16:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mancent.org.uk\/?page_id=3494"},"modified":"2020-09-25T18:59:02","modified_gmt":"2020-09-25T17:59:02","slug":"britain-and-empire-origins-and-growth-c1500-1850","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mancent.org.uk\/?page_id=3494","title":{"rendered":"Britain and Empire: Origins and Growth c1500-1850"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alan Sennett<\/p>\n<p>Part One of a three-part course looking at Britain and its empire 1500-2000.\u00a0 This ten-week course traces the origins and development of Britain\u2019s Empire through to the mid-nineteenth century.\u00a0 We examine voyages of exploration, the development of colonies in America and slavery in the Caribbean.\u00a0 We consider the emergence of a trading empire and the territorial expansion of the period after 1780, not least in India.\u00a0 We also look at the shift from empire as a peripheral activity to its central role in the formation of a \u201cBritish\u201d identity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.\u00a0 Along the way we look at historical debates such as \u201cwhat drove and sustained imperialism: economics, politics or missionary zeal?\u201d\u00a0 How did Britain extend its empire at the expense of other powers?
