Roman Britain 280-340"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birgitta Hoffmann<\/p>\n<p>In the late 3<sup>rd<\/sup> century life changed for the British provinces. First they became part of Carausius\u2019 breakaway empire, then they became part of Constantius Chlorus\u2019 part of the Tetrarchy and then Constantine was crowned in York.<br \/>\nThe two generations saw the introduction of Christianity as a legitimate (and increasingly favoured religion), the rise of the coastal defences around Britain. The complete restructuring of the administration.<\/p>\n<p>All this caused a lot of change in the province, some for the better, some not and some parts of Britain tried to ignore it \u2013 with mixed results. \u00a0This course is going to track these changes in the different parts of the province.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The course will consist of 2 series of 5 lectures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Thursday: Case Studies and important sites<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On Friday: General overviews<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fridays: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>15<sup>th<\/sup> January<\/strong>: Entering the world of a \u2018Late Antiquity\u2019 \u2013 change everywhere<\/p>\n<p><strong>22<sup>nd<\/sup> January<\/strong>: The urban sites: large and small.<\/p>\n<p><strong>29<sup>th<\/sup> January<\/strong>: The houses of the superrich and their neighbours<\/p>\n<p><strong>5<sup>th<\/sup> February<\/strong>: Production and distribution on an industrial scale \u2013 or not?<\/p>\n<p><strong>12<sup>th<\/sup> February<\/strong>: The military situation and why are people burying coinage everywhere<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursdays:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>21<sup>st<\/sup> January<\/strong>: Hadrian\u2019s Wall and its refurbishment \u2013 and the rise of Cirencester and Lincoln?<\/p>\n<p><strong>28<sup>nd<\/sup> January:<\/strong> Dorchester and the Salt towns<\/p>\n<p><strong>4<sup>th<\/sup> February<\/strong>: North Leigh and the villas around Cirencester<\/p>\n<p><strong>11<sup>th<\/sup> February<\/strong>: Oxfordshire Pottery and Black burnished ware. What is going on?<\/p>\n<p><strong>18<sup>th<\/sup> February<\/strong>: The hoards of the Gallic Empire and Carausius.
