But our main source is the Jewish historian Josephus who gives two accounts in his writings of the life of this colourful ruler. A Roman \u201cclient king\u201d yet ruthless at home he learned the art of survival. He was also a great builder and the evidence for the monumental building projects can still be seen in the archaeological record.
