Lists of famous saints and places were circulated creating a new type of travel literature describing routes and sites worth seeing, starting with Rome and Jerusalem.<br \/>\nThis tradition of travel for religious purposes (with a helping of sightseeing) continued and developed through the early middle ages and became a feature throughout the Christian world with considerable infrastructure projects undertaken to facilitate the journeys.
