The Inca civilisation of Peru had built an extensive empire by the 16th<\/sup> century. The arrival in the 1530\u2019s of a small band of Spanish Conquistadores should have posed only a minimal threat. Yet the Incas were reduced over the next 30 years to a subject status as the Spaniards exerted control.
