The Great Trade routes: The Silk Road II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birgitta Hoffmann<\/p>\n<div class=\"eds-l-mar-bot-8\">\n<p class=\"eds-text-bm\"><strong>An introduction to the history and archaeology of the Tarim Basin to the 17th century<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"eds-l-mar-bot-8 structured-content\">\n<div class=\"has-user-generated-content\">\n<div class=\"eds-l-mar-vert-6 eds-l-sm-mar-vert-4 eds-text-bm structured-content-rich-text\">\n<div class=\"eds-text--left\">\n<p>The Gansu Corridor and the Tarim basin link the Chinese heartlands with the road west via the steppes or through Ancient Persia, without this very dry and difficult area the overland Silkroad cannot operate.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the oasis cities in the basin like Dunhuang and Khotan became bywords for wealth and the ability to meet people from all over the world in their markets and monasteries.<\/p>\n<p>The very dry climate at the edge of the Gobi desert and in the Tarim basin has in addition preserved remains from the Neolithic onwards that you can rarely find anywhere else from clothes, letters, silk, but also house and temple structures and artwork.<\/p>\n<p>This 10-week course will explore the archaeology and history of the area, as well as the history of its archaeology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>29 September<\/strong>\u00a0Geography, the Great Game and the early Archaeology in the Tarim Basin<\/p>\n<p><strong>6 October<\/strong>\u00a0Where it all begins: of Wheat, Camels and bronze casting moving east and the climate of the Tarim Basin<\/p>\n<p><strong>13 October<\/strong>\u00a0Tarim Mummies (Please note: this lecture will contain images of human remains)<\/p>\n<p><strong>20 October<\/strong> The rise of the Silkroad: Khotan and Kashgar<\/p>\n<p><strong>27 October<\/strong>\u00a0Xuanzang and the southern road<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 November<\/strong>\u00a0Guochang and the Prefecture of Anxi<\/p>\n<p><strong>10 November\u00a0<\/strong>The Gansu Corridor and the Great Wall<\/p>\n<p><strong>17 November\u00a0<\/strong>Dunhuang and Turfan &#8211;
