Our first study, Purcell\u2019s ode <em>Hail bright Cecilia <\/em>(1692) is a masterpiece of the genre, full of splendour and display, but also creating a humorous contest for supremacy between the instruments.<\/p>\n<p>Three modern celebrations of the power of music will be the focus for the second morning: Parry\u2019s ode <em>Blest Pair of Sirens<\/em>, the <em>Serenade to Music<\/em> by Vaughan Williams, and Benjamin Britten\u2019s <em>Hymn to Saint Cecilia<\/em>.\u00a0 With poetry by Shakespeare, Milton and W H Auden included, there will be much to discuss in the contrasting styles of these lovely pieces, and in the deeper philosophical meanings embodied in the words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday October 12th\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10am \u2013 12.30pm\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Purcell\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday October 19<sup>th <\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a010am \u2013 12.30pm\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Parry, Vaughan Williams. <\/strong><strong>and Britten<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each morning will consist of two one-hour lecture\/discussions delivered via Zoom.
