Everyone has heard of William the Conqueror, 1066 and the Norman Conquest, but the Normans did much more than this. In origin a band of Norse pirates, they went on to be one of the most successful peoples of the central middle ages, for good or ill dominating the history of much of Western Europe in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This course traces the activities of the Normans from their origins in the early-tenth century to the end of the twelfth century. Topics covered include the Norman\u2019s Viking origins, the settlement of Normandy, the conquest of England, the Normans in Ireland and Italy and the emergence and flowering of Norman Kingdom of Sicily.<\/p>\n
