His father was chief minister to the Jewish King in Jerusalem, but in the midst of the political and military turmoil between Rome and Parthia Herod secured the support of Mark Anthony and Octavian to become King. When the two former allies fell out he still managed to hold on to power. He was renowned as a great builder of palaces, fortresses, and temples. But in his later years, family tensions became atrocious &#8211; he executed one wife and three of his sons.
