Under the Sumerians cities grew up, writing was invented and literature created. In the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> millennium they were succeeded by Semitic peoples and the 1<sup>st<\/sup> millennium saw the rise of the great empires of Assyria and Babylon. They impacted the peoples of the Bible Lands, of Egypt and Anatolia and the names of their kings like Sennacharib and Nebuchadnezzar have never been forgotten.
