The land between the Tigris and Euphrates is one of the cradles of civilisation. Under the Sumerians cities grew up, writing was invented and literature created. In the 2nd<\/sup> millennium they were succeeded by Semitic peoples and the 1st<\/sup> millennium saw the rise of the great empires of Assyria and Babylon. They impacted the peoples of the Bible Lands, of Egypt and Anatolia and the names of their kings like Sennacharib and Nebuchadnezzar have never been forgotten. As well as the history of the region we will examine the literature, religious beliefs and culture of these people from modern day Iraq and see how they influenced later ideas long after their cities had crumbled into dust<\/p>\n
