But these are not mere entertainment pieces. All the
time, the composer is expanding the ensemble, the structures and the reach of his harmonic
imagination. We shall investigate two quintets: the Piano Quintet in A major, known as ‘the Trout
Quintet’ after the variation theme within it, and the String Quintet in C, dating from the last months
of his life.
Four years earlier he produced a large-scale Octet for wind and strings which is surprisingly
optimistic, although he already knew of the disease which would abruptly terminate his life. As the
Octet was commissioned to be a response to Beethoven’s immensely popular Septet, we shall take
the opportunity to compare the two, and perhaps discover what makes Beethoven unmistakeably
Beethoven, and Schubert unmistakeably Schubert.
The course will run twice, on Thursday mornings and on Monday mornings:

Thursday May 8 th 10am – 12.30pm Beethoven Septet, Schubert Octet
Thursday May 15 th 10am – 12.30pm Piano Quintet in A major (‘the Trout’); String Quintet in C major

Monday June 9th 10am – 12.30pm Beethoven Septet, Schubert Octet
Monday June 16th 10am – 12.30pm Piano Quintet in A major (‘the Trout’); String Quintet in C major

Each morning will consist of two one-hour lecture/discussions delivered via Zoom.
