Rosemary Broadbent<\/p>\n

Elgar served a long apprenticeship before receiving the recognition he deserved, but
\nthe year 1898, when he was forty-one, saw the beginning of three works which would make
\nhis name. Commissions from the Norwich and Birmingham Festivals gave rise to the song
\ncycle Sea Pictures and the magnificent oratorio The Dream of Gerontius, and an inspired
\nevening of improvisation was the seed for the \u2018Enigma\u2019 Variations. By the autumn of 1900 all
\nthree works had been introduced to the public and Elgar\u2019s name was on everyone\u2019s lips.
\nThis course will examine all three works and aim to solve another enigma \u2013 how this
\nsudden flow of creativity made Elgar a figure of national importance and gave us some of the
\nmost treasured works in the history of English music.<\/p>\n

The course will run twice, on Thursday mornings and on Monday mornings:<\/p>\n

Each morning will consist of two one-hour lecture\/discussions delivered via Zoom. There will be a break for coffee, during which the meeting will remain open for informal conversation.<\/p>\n
