This course explores the beginnings with the rise of the Roman Republic and later the early Empire. At first the Romans fought against other peoples in Italy but soon they began to expand beyond the peninsula. The first great opponent was the Empire of Carthage, but soon further conquests followed in the west in Gaul and Spain and in the east in Greece, Asia Minor and Syria.
