This is the first in a two year programme on the history of Ancient Egypt.\u00a0 As the Sahara dried out 7000 years ago communities increasingly migrated to the Nile, and there they created some of the first urban settlements in what is known as the Pre-Dynastic Period. Eventually, just before 3000BC, a ruler from the south called Narmer united the \u201cTwo Lands\u201d of Upper and Lower Egypt into a single state. In the Third Dynasty the Pharaoh Djoser built the monumental Step Pyramid at Saqqara and in the Fourth Dynasty the pyramids at Giza were constructed. Egypt was at the zenith of creativity. This course will trace the fascinating history of Egypt from its earliest times to the apex of the Old Kingdom era.<\/p>\n
