Alan Sennett and John Cochrane<\/p>\n

This ten week course looks at cinema, politics and society in France and Italy from wartime through the liberation and post-war reconstruction of the late 1940s and early 1950s.\u00a0 Using copious film examples from neo-realist Italian cinema and some classic French cinema of the period we will explore the way cinema addressed political, social and economic issues in a period of great upheaval and change.\u00a0 Cinema both reflected and commented upon questions of resistance to fascism, hopes of renewal in the later 1940s and finally disillusionment with the new political and social relativities.\u00a0 The course makes use of extensive use of film clips, setting them in their historical context and offering commentaries and interpretations<\/p>\n
