What were the issues in medieval Catholicism that led to this protest, and why did Luther succeed where earlier reformers had failed? His actions sparked a reformation that split Europe and Christendom creating separate Lutheran and reformed churches ain the north with southern Europe remaining Catholic under the Counter Reformation. Meanwhile even more radical voices emerged.
