SILKROAD STUDIES and beyond : Trade in Africa and African Archaeology

Birgitta Hoffmann

A series of lectures on the archaeology in Subsaharan Africa and how it relates to our understanding of regional and international trade

Africa south and East of the Sahara is home to amazing archaeological cultures, many of which acquired their wealth through various forms of trade.
In this series of 5 lectures, we will be looking into the archaeology and how this intersects with trade systems such as the maritime Silkroad trade, but also the European traders in the Atlantic and Pacific. We will be visiting several World Heritage Sites, such as Great Zimbabwe, but we will also be talking about the archaeology of the European and transatlantic trade in Africa (Note: yes, this includes the slave trade)

Please note all lectures will be recorded and distributed to the participants the following week. This should allow participants from different time zones, or those working to catch up with the lectures.
