Rosemary Broadbent
Elgar served a long apprenticeship before receiving the recognition he deserved, but
the year 1898, when he was forty-one, saw the beginning of three works which would make
his name. Commissions from the Norwich and Birmingham Festivals gave rise to the song
cycle Sea Pictures and the magnificent oratorio The Dream of Gerontius, and an inspired
evening of improvisation was the seed for the ‘Enigma’ Variations. By the autumn of 1900 all
three works had been introduced to the public and Elgar’s name was on everyone’s lips.
This course will examine all three works and aim to solve another enigma – how this
sudden flow of creativity made Elgar a figure of national importance and gave us some of the
most treasured works in the history of English music.
The course will run twice, on Thursday mornings and on Monday mornings:
Thursday February 19th 10am – 12.30pm ‘Enigma’ Variations and Sea Pictures
Thursday February 26th 10am – 12.30pm Dream of Gerontius
Monday March 9th 10am – 12.30pm ‘Enigma’ Variations and Sea Pictures
Monday March 16th 10am – 12.30pm Dream of Gerontius
Each morning will consist of two one-hour lecture/discussions delivered via Zoom. There will be a break for coffee, during which the meeting will remain open for informal conversation.
