Rome during the Empire had about thirty legions. Nominally 6000 soldier strong, they were stationed all around the Empire.
But how do you ensure that a settlement this size is manageable, how do you ensure there is enough food and water? Room for the soldiers and their animals? Space for the families of the soldiers and the traders? Selecting a site as the permanent base of a legion, let alone two, was one of the masterpieces of Roman townplanning and diplomacy.
During this dayschool we will look at how this process was managed, what evidence we have for the sites, but archaeologically and historically, and why they were so good at surviving into the Middle Ages.
Dayschool: Saturday, 24 January 2026 Time: 11.00– 16.00 GMT
