Farming in Scandinavia in antiquity was precarious; the high latitude and quality of the soil and the geography in some regions tended to force the population into a series of well-defined regions, such as Zealand, the Oslo Fjord or West Norway. However, recent research has shown that by the 3rd century, an extremely gold-rich society developed in these areas that developed a structured society with rich high/kings and impressive sanctuary districts, laying the foundation of the world that would at the end of the 8th century produce the expeditions that we know as the Vikings.
During this dayschool we will take a look at the modern research in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany and ask what the society was like that developed these objects and sites.
