Mornings with a Masterpiece: Dvořák’s Chamber Music – The Old World and the New

Rosemary Broadbent

Dvořák’s love of his native land was the inspiration for much of his music, culminating in two of his greatest chamber works, a Piano Quintet and a Piano Trio. The Trio is particularly adventurous in its form and expression: where would it all lead? Very unexpectedly – to America!

At this point the composer accepted the offer of a prestigious post in New York, with a request to help found a distinctive American school of composition. So we shall spend one session in the Old World with the two works mentioned above, and the second session in the New World with a string quartet and a string quintet written for an American audience. Four different ensembles – two nations – one composer. How will they compare?
