Rome and its Enemies – Decline

Michael Tunnicliffe

During their long history the Romans fought against many different people. This course explores the period from AD60-305.  It begins with the revolt of Boudicca in Britain and its suppression by the legions. But by the 120’s the Emperor Hadrian had called a halt to any further expansion, and later in the 2nd century Marcus Aurelius faced growing pressure both in the east and from the tribes of Germania. The middle years of the 3rd century were disastrous with a rapid turn-over of emperors. Despite the apparent revival under a strong emperor like Diocletian the days of the Empire were numbered with the territories divided between a quartet of rulers. The course ends with a look at Roman Britain in the 3rd century
