This Day School examines four civilisations and their attitudes to the end of the world
We begin in ancient Greece and Rome and their fears of natural disasters and the breakdown of civilised society. Then we examine Viking culture and its picture of the “Twilight of the Gods” presented in their marvellous poem about Ragnarok. In the afternoon we look first at India and the ideas of the future represented in Hinduism and Buddhism. Finally, we go to the New World and the Maya civilisation. Did they really predict that the world would end in 2012?
