Birthplace of the emperor Trajan and Hadrian, Italica is one of the oldest colonies in Roman Spain and the defacto capital of the Baetica (Southern Spain). It was the economical centre of the Baetica and is now a large archaeological site renowned for its mosaics. But Italica was the centre of the Guadalquivir valley and as such wealthy both from mining, olive oil and grain growing and its exports.
