Ovid in Pontus – The poems of old age

Birgitta Hoffmann

This term we will be translating some of Ovid’s late work, viz the poems that were written during his exile in Pontos.
Both the Tristia and the Ex Ponto have a very different atmosphere to the earlier poems, less lighthearted, less interested in “girls meet boys”. But the mastery of the Latin language is still there and is still able to impress, perhaps more so, for having a wider range of subject matter.

The text we will study will be distributed at the beginning of January (but if you are interested in the complete texts they can be found online: Tristia and Ex Ponto.
