SILKROAD STUDIES: Trade in and around the Sahara

Birgitta Hoffmann

A series of lectures on the trade and exchange networks in North Africa from Prehistory to the Early Modern World.

The Sahara, until the advent of flight, has always been seen as one of the large challenges to trade. But recently, with the discovery of the ‘Green Sahara’ during the early prehistoric Period and a whole series of archaeological projects focusing on the oases and the trade routes linking them, it has been possible to better understand how this area was traversed, selling goods from horses to gemstones, and from wild horses to gold.
