History and archaeology of Rome from 650 to 1527
When we visit Rome today, we admire the art and architecture of very different periods. On the one hand, the ruins of ancient Rome, and on the other the art and monuments of the papacy including nearly 1000 churches of the Renaissance and Baroque and Roccoco period, with the names of some of the best artists of their time attached.
Sometimes, such as with the Baths of Diocletian, the two eras come together Surrounding this is an incredibly vibrant city.
But what happened in between the two periods? What happened to Rome after the Justinianic Plague and Gregory the Great? How do you become the capital of the Catholic World? Is this the city of the popes or the city of the secular people who lived and worked there? How do you live in one of the largest ruin fields of Europe and where do you get your food from? And last not least: who is Cola di Rienzo? This course will explore how Rome reinvented itself many times to become the Rome of the Popes of the 17th and 18th century.
Please note all lectures will be recorded and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the next week. This should allow participants from different time zones, or those working to catch up with the lectures.
