Mornings with a Masterpiece Shostakovich Chamber Music: Private Conversations

Shostakovich lived in dangerous times. His more public works – symphonies and opera – brought him widespread acclaim which twice turned to devastating condemnation. He was robbed of his teaching posts and access to publication, and was lucky to escape with his life.  Yet throughout this turmoil he continued to express himself privately in his chamber music.

He was supported by a remarkable friendship with one group, the Beethoven String Quartet, for whom he wrote almost all of his chamber works. For the works with piano, he joined them as a performing member of the ensemble. We shall explore a selection of the resulting works, spread over a period of more than thirty years. Shostakovich was always reluctant to express himself in words, but if we are to know any of his inner thoughts, we may find them here.

The course will run twice, on Thursday mornings and on Monday mornings:

Thursday October 2nd          10am – 12.30pm       Piano Quintet Op. 57    Piano Trio no. 2 Op. 67       

 

Thursday October 9th           10am – 12.30pm       The String Quartets      (focussing on no. 2, no. 8, no. 15)

Each morning will consist of two one-hour lecture/discussions delivered via Zoom. There will be a break for coffee, during which the meeting will remain open for informal conversation.
