Perilous Times: Women and Children in Egypt and Republican Rome

Birgitta Hoffmann and Joanne Backhouse

What role did women and children play in antiquity? What were the social expectations, how did women react to it and how did children and family fit into these roles. Using the archaeological and textual evidence of republican Rome and Egypt, we are going to explore different models of life and how to look after children in these two ancient societies.
