Roman mosaics are rightly famous, but where did the tradition of patterned floors come from? This course follows the development of patterned floors from Greece and the palaces of Macedonia and Pergamon, to the great houses of the Roman Republic and the 1 c. CE.

5 May:  Why do I need to learn this stuff, mum? From Geometry to Pella
12 May:  The arrival of colour: Pergamon and beyond
19 May: Asiatic mosaics:  Going East….
26 May: Mosaics and the Ptolemies: Egypt, Cyprus, Cyrenaica?
2 June:  Going West: The Hellenistic mosaics in Italy
9 June:  Augustus and Opus Sectile: The philosophy of “if you have it, flaunt it.”
