The Letters of James and John

Michael Tunnicliffe

These books belong to the so called “Catholic Epistles” which come towards the end of the New Testament, and are among the lesser studied parts of scripture. James famously seems to be at odds with Paul over the question of “justification by faith”. It was one reason why Martin Luther disliked it so much! Meanwhile the letters of John show how issues of heresy were emerging by the end of the first century and how one author sought to deal with the matter. The course involves a close reading of the texts in English and a critical study of their background and meaning.
