19TH CENTURY CHINA – BETWEEN EUROPEAN INTERFERENCE AND CULTURAL TRADITIONALISM

Birgitta Hoffmann

This is a dayschool to set the scene for a trip to the British Museum to look at the exhibition and look at the Chinese collections from the pre-19th century, but can also be enjoyed on its own.

The 19th century in China was a period of profound change. The rising pressure by European forces on the one hand and conflicting cultural developments inside China stressing modernisation vs traditional norms in a period of rising economic pressure, make this a period well worth looking at, both for its cultural achievements and for its political history.

Dayschool: Saturday, 23 September 2023       Time: 11.00– 16.00 BST
