Celtic Saints – Between pious legends and archaeology

Birgitta Hoffmann

Between the early 5th and 9th century AD Europe and especially Britain saw a flurry of Legends about holy men who had started their life and training in Britain and Ireland and became the founders of monasteries and cathedrals. Many like Patrick and Columban or David have become patrons of later countries, many seem to exist just as names of small churches.
What do we know about the people behind the legends and what trace have they left in the archaeological record?

This dayschool will look at a variety of saint and exploring their legends and when they first appeared, as well as the archaeology of the sites they are associated with and try and explore how much was pious fiction and when these legends preserve a historical reality.

Please note all lectures will be recorded and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the next week. This should allow participants from different time zones, or those working to catch up with the lectures.
