When people talk about the Bay of Naples they now mostly talk about the Southern part, with Pompeii, Stabiae and Capri. However, traditionally the Northern part with Cumae, Misenum, Baiae, Pozzuoli and Naples is the older and economically more important part of the Bay.
This day school will look at the transformation of the bay from the Augustan period onwards with the huge harbour works to handle the Egyptian and North African grain fleet, to the naval base at Misenum and the development of Baiae as one of the largest spa towns in the Roman Empire. But also at the effect of the eruption on the north side and the evidence for reconstruction.
