Silkroad Studies: The archaeology of the Sultanate of Rum

Birgitta Hoffmann

Long before the Ottomans were able to control modern day Turkey, there was a Turkic Sultanat in the interior of Asia Minor known as the Sultanate of Rum. A part of the Seljuk Group of Turkic tribes, it left impressive remains of their time in Konya and bridges Byzantine and Turkic building and cultural traditions. This day will look at the history and archaeology and the reason for this cultural fusion.

Please note all lectures will be recorded and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the next week. This should allow participants from different time zones, or those working to catch up with the lectures.
