Creina Mansfield, Alan Sennett and John Cochrane
Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque, this widely acclaimed depiction of the realities of WWI is often seen as a classic anti-war film. In 2008 the film was ranked by the American Film Institute as the seventh-best American epic film. We will consider both novel and film, setting them in historical context and exploring the film’s production, its relationship to Remarque’s novel, as well as responses to both novel and film.
