Online course : Herod the Great

Michael Tunnicliffe

Herod is famous because of the story of the massacre of the Innocents at Bethlehem in the Gospel of Matthew. But our main source is the Jewish historian Josephus who gives two accounts in his writings of the life of this colourful ruler. A Roman “client king” yet ruthless at home he learned the art of survival. He was also a great builder and the evidence for the monumental building projects can still be seen in the archaeological record. This course examines what we can know of this fascinating individual from the past.
