Mozart’s Church Music

Rosemary Broadbent

Mozart’s two masterpieces of religious music, the Mass in C minor and the Requiem, are both frustratingly incomplete, and the attempts to complete them over the years are a story in their own right. There is also a considerable repertory of short Masses and Vesper settings which deserve to be better known. We shall use Mozart’s letters as a valuable source to throw light on his religious belief and investigate the extraordinary music which arose from it.

Course materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring any relevant scores they may have.
