Handel’s Messiah is the most popular oratorio of any written before or since, yet it is the least typical in the long list of works Handel wrote in this form. In these sessions, we shall take a look at Handel’s first and last oratorios, one secular and one sacred, with a particular exploration of his wonderfully dramatic writing for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. On the way we shall meet angels and a monster, a rescue, a murder, and the whole gamut of emotions from bliss to despair, each pictured with both economy and depth.
This investigation will help us to understand the qualities, which combine to make Messiah unique.

Each morning will consist of two one-hour lecture/discussions delivered via Zoom. There will be a break for coffee, during which the meeting will remain open for informal conversation.
