The Roman Empire in the 4th century

Michael Tunnicliffe

The fourth century saw great changes in the Roman world. It began with the persecution of Christians under Diocletian but ended with Christianity as the official religion of the Empire. The figure of Constantine the Great looms large over the century but other emperors such as Julian the Apostate or Theodosius are also of note. This course will examine the changes that ensued in society, politics and religion and ends with a look at Roman Britain on the eve of the departure of the legions at the start of the 5th century
