Roman Britain in the Second Century

Birgitta Hoffmann

After the turbulent first century, which saw the Roman Army operating all over Roman Britain and far into Scotland, the second century AD is the time when the province is settling down and, despite a large military presence, develops in many areas a distinct civilian character.

The research in the last forty years enables us to follow this development from the beginnings of the Roman civilian towns and the first appearances of Roman material in the countryside to 200, when we see different parts of Britain having developed their own responses to the Roman presence.

From the flourishing cities of the south to the mining industries in the West and North to the ever-changing Northern frontier and the many different farms and villas, we are able to follow how this world changed in 4-5 generations.
