An Introduction to Turkic history and archaeology in Asia
One of the continuous players along the Silkroad are the Turkic speaking groups. Starting with the Nomads in Mongolia to the Western and Eastern Khaganates and the empires of the Ghurids, Seljuks and the Ottomans. This course will be a short introduction to the history and archaeology of the Turkic-speaking tribes and how they were able to use the land-based Silkroads to support their empires.
1 May: Where it all begins – Turkic archaeology in Mongolia and Siberia and the early sources
8 May: The Goekturks and the Turkish Khaganate (6th- 8th c. century)
15 May: Karluks and Uighur Kaghanates in Central Asia
22 May: Halfterm
29 May: Turks and the Abbasid Caliphate
5 June: The Karakhanids and Mahmud of Ghazni
12 June: The Seljuks
19 June: The Rise of the Ottomans
Please note all lectures will be recorded and distributed to the participants at the beginning of the next week. This should allow participants from different time zones, or those working to catch up with the lectures.
